The response to my call out for a singalong has been amazing, with both children and adults joining in the fun of singing a song about friendship – always important but particularly so right now when we’re physically separated from our friends.

Many Theatre Bugs and Adelaide Theatre Academy students joined in to make, what Peter describes as “…a joyous and uplifting video clip.”

This term our Theatre Bugs & Adelaide Theatre Academy classes are online. The timetable and class descriptions are shown here and we will continue to offer FREE TRIAL classes to students who haven’t attended a Theatre Bugs or ATA class before.

Online Safety

In this online environment, Theatre Bugs & Adelaide Theatre Academy is just as vigilant about child safety.

All our teachers and staff have relevant Working With Children checks and qualifications, and we must also insist that our students, their caregivers, and families understand and follow these safety guidelines.

• During online classes, all students who have the appropriate class uniform should wear it at all times. If students don’t have a uniform, they must be appropriately attired so as to cover torsos at all times (e.g. t-shirts, singlets, pants, shorts, skirts).  Children are asked to wear their uniform or change to suitable attire for attending online classes as this helps them to psychologically prepare for class. Our experience is already showing that this helps students to be focussed and ready when their online classes begin. We want them to get the most out of each class and the uniform also helps to share a message that they are a part of a Theatre Bugs community. This sense of belonging is especially important as students are increasingly isolated from their normal friends and classmates.
• During online classes, siblings, other family members, and friends must be appropriately attired so as to cover torsos at all times (e.g. t-shirts, singlets, pants, shorts, skirts),
• Ensure no questionable/offensive images/material is present, nor can be seen during class.

Should a teacher or participant of an online class detect a situation outside these guidelines, the student will be removed from the online class and the parents/caregivers briefed by Theatre Bugs/ATA General Manager, Michael Eustice.

It was March 2020, and the team at Theatre Bugs rocked back-and-forth in a huddle as we listened to the news that the world was about to close.

The tissues were passed around (we could still buy tissues back then, and share them), and premonitions of children without acting, dancing and singing classes, filled our hearts with dread.

COVID19 must be taken seriously. But the Theatre Bugs team grew up in a world where nothing stops a show. Not nerves, not money… N-O-T-H-I-N-G!

Within minutes and in true theatre tradition, we pulled ourselves together. We chicken flapped to release shoulder tension, exhaled horsey-style, and mimed the placing of our thinking caps.

Audiovisual specialists were consulted, technological equipment was sourced, and teachers briefed.

Theatre Bugs and Adelaide Theatre Academy (ATA) were about to undertake an adventure on one of the biggest learning curves ever to cross our path.

We weren’t really sure whether the 3.5mm plug should be plastic or nylon and we didn’t actually know if the new microphones would pick up echoes from another room, but we soldiered on – testing, trying, rehearsing and brainstorming until the first virtual singing class began just days later.

Today at Theatre Bugs online, dads dance with daughters, fairies share their dance floors with siblings and young actors feel the joy of performance is with them once again.

It has been tense and upsetting at times. Questions about this changing world wobble our positive momentum every day. Common catch-cries of “we’re all in this together” and “we’ll be stronger for it” do go some way towards steering us all into the future.

But, it is the art of persistence, learned over years of performance training, that sets our certainty in stone.

For Theatre Bugs & ATA, this crisis shines a bright light on the magical lessons of music, dance, and acting.

It is proof that studying and practising the arts, does build character, resilience, and creative thinking. Such important traits for survival in this modern world.

Benjamin Franklin famously quoted:

“There are three sorts of people in the world. Those who are immovable, those who are movable, and those who move.”

At Theatre Bugs & ATA we strive to be, and to teach our students to be ‘those who move’!

In the dim, dark midst of COVID-19 restrictions, a group of Theatre Bug students and their teachers Zoomed together in April 2020 over a period of just 4 days to create two versions of an exciting project, The Show Must Go Online.

This is one of the very first online theatre productions created anywhere in the world. We’re very proud of what our amazing students created in such a short time using new technology.
